Endometriosis

Good Afternoon

I am 49 and have suffered with very heavy periods and bleeding in between for the past 3/4 months.

I had a scan last week which showed a cyst on my ovary of just over 5cm and a thickening of womb lining ( did not give measurement )

I have been referred to a gynaecologist as urgent but the hospital called and said that they cannot offer me an appointment until after 6 weeks!

I have asked to be seen privately and that will be within a week- does anyone know if there will any advantages to this, or will they just tell me what I already know.

I have convinced myself this is something sinister but feel upset that an urgent referal could take 6 weeks.

I would appreciate any comments

  • Hello MeIG and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to hear about this delay in getting an urgent appointment and can appreciatte that this is a stressful situtaion.

I expect that seeing a gynaecologist privately will give you the opportunity to talk things over with a specialist and get their expert input which may well be reassuring, but it can be expensive.

There are different sorts of ovarian cysts, but before the menopause by far the majority are benign (non cancerous). And although thickening of the womb lining can sometimes be due to cancer other things can cause it too and this sort of cancer is also uncommon before the menopause.

Most people referred urgently don't have cancer at the end of the day once they have been investigated, so there is usually a good chance that nothing sinister is going on.

I hope the private appointment goes well. If you want to talk anything over with us please do ring us on 0808 800 4040, we are here weekdays 9-5.

    Best wishes

    Julia
