Growing Lump in my right breast

Hi,

I'm Willow and I'm 15 years old. I've had a small lump (about the size of a smartie) in my right breast  for a long time but never thought much of it. But last night, I started having discomfort and noticed it has grown 3 X it's size. Now it is about 3.5cm. It's only in my right and it feels heavy, swollen and pink. I'm a little worried. Do you think it could be breast cancer or is it normal with growth?

Thanks x

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I'm sorry you are worried about a breast lump. Whenever someone contacts us with something that is worrying them we always suggest they make an appointment to see their GP and get checked out to be on the safe side. But I don’t think you need to be overly concerned as breast cancer would be very rare in someone of your age.

Breast lumps are very common in young girls. As your breasts are still developing, changes may develop and these are nearly always due to normal changes in the breast tissue. But, I appreciate it can still be worrying when you find differences in how your breasts look or feel.

The organisation Breast Cancer Now has some information about what is normal at this link.  They also have some more information for teenagers here.

I wonder if you’ve told your mum or a trusted adult about your health worry. I’m sure they’d want to know so they can support you. They can also accompany you to see your GP if this is needed.

    I hope this helps.

    Kind regards,

    Celene

  • Hi Celene,

Ah thankyou for replying. I haven't told anyone yet as I was a bit embarrassed. But yes, I thought it might have something to do with development. I'm just wondering why it's only ever been on my right? I'll take a look at those links.

    Thanks again,

    Willow
