Lip and lymph node cancer questions. Any help please

Hi

I didn't know where else I could go to ask these questions.
My dad was recently diagnosed with lip cancer. He had his bottom lip removed to remove the cancer and had a biopsy a couple of weeks later to make sure the cancer had gone. Unfortunately it has spread to his lymph nodes. My dad won't let anyone go to his appointment with him so we can't ask the questions we want to ask and if we get involved he won't have the treatment (his very stubborn).

The Dr said the cancer is floating in the lymph nodes which he said is a good thing and thinks if they remove this he hopes will be the last thing. He went for a scan to try see if it had spread further but they couldn't get the dye into his veins and wont try again.

The questions I'm scared to ask really are what are the survival rates of this form of cancer?
if it's in the lymph nodes can they really remove it?
he has to have Immunotherapy after. Will this make him ill like chemo does?

These questions probably sound stupid but I just can't get my head round it and I'm still in shock. I know I'm not the one going through it but I'm really struggling with it mentally.
work isn't supportive and my dads who I normally talk to about things so I feel lost.

thank you

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about your dad's situation, this must be a difficult time for you both and I can appreciate you have some questions.

It can be worrying if you feel that you are being kept in the dark and feel a bit lost about what is happening with your dad, so I hope the following information will help.

I think it is fair to say that what your dad is doing ( not talking about his cancer and not allowing you to go to his appointments with him) is what many people going through a serious illness decide to do. By not talking to close family and possibly not asking their specialist cancer team questions themselves it is in a way their way of coping. So don't worry too much if you do not get all the information you want now as over time this may change.  You might also find that not asking direct questions might help your dad to talk more easily about what is happening.

I am afraid we cannot tell anyone what their prognosis (outlook) is because we are not involved in their care. Your dad's cancer team will have the best information about this but even they cannot know exactly what this could be. We have some general information about this on our website here

It might be helpful for you to have more knowledge about this type of cancer. We have information about this on our website here    You will notice that mouth cancer includes lip cancer.

Lymph nodes can be removed if the cancer has spread there but I don't know if they will be.  We have information about this type of surgery on our website here

Immunotherapy is given to some types of cancer in the mouth. It is a targeted treatment so for many people taking it is often well tolerated and easier to take than chemotherapy.  However as with all treatment there are side effects. For specific information about the type of immunotherapy that is used for mouth cancers and their side effects look here

Hopefully over time you will know more about your dad's situation.  You are also welcome to get back to us you may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
