Advice please

I’m now 8 months p/o hysterectomy for stage 1a grade 3 endometrial. I had my lst check up finally in Nov, oncologist gave me internal and said couldn’t feel anything come back in March for next check up. Am I wrong to think as grade 3 that should have had a scan ?? Will be a year in March and no scan to check high grade is a bit worrying.

Anyone else same as me ??? They took no lympthnode as said no evidence of travel but did have 4 brachytherapy

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear that you had surgery for endometrial cancer and I can appreciate you have questions about how you should be followed up.

How anyone is followed up after cancer treatment is based upon the type of cancer they were diagnosed with, the stage (the extent) of the cancer and the grade (this can determine how fast growing the cancer cells were when they were looked at by a pathologist). Also how successful the initial treatment (this was your hysterectomy) was at getting rid of the cancer.  It is also an opportunity to see how someone has recovered.

For many people having been treated for endometrial cancer they are seen initially every 3 -4 months and then this will get less often before the patient is discharged. Whether you need to have scans at each of these appointments really depends on what the doctor that sees you says is needed. I am afraid we are not able to say if you should have had them.

We have general information about how people with endometrial cancer are followed up after having had treatment, it might help to read it, you can see this on our website here www.cancerresearchuk.org/.../follow-up

You were given brachytherapy because your cancer was a grade 3, this was to reduce the risk of the cancer coming back.  A stage 1a endometrial cancer means that the cancer has not spread to the lymph nodes, however if you are worried about this do discuss it with your specialist team, in particular your cancer nurse specialist.

I hope this has been of some help. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
