Mastectomy 2 years ago, Pfizer Booster

Next week is the booking, but I am reading about swollen lymph glands and I had been told this is serious after a mastectomy and an effect of the Pfizer Jab.

My question is "Should I get the Pfizer jab or wait for an alternative?"

  • Hello

There is no known reason not to have any of the covid19 vaccines two years after surgery for breast cancer.  If the lymph nodes in your armpit were removed or treated with radiotherapy during your treatment there is a risk of a condition called lymphoedema developing in the arm (swelling in the arm), if you developed an infection in the arm on the side where you had the lymph nodes removed or treated.  So, in this situation, we would encourage you to avoid having any blood tests or injections in the arm on that side, as there is a small risk of infection developing if you break the skin.  This is more likely to happen through accidental cuts and injuries than through an injection using sterile equipment, so the risk is extremely low.  But you might want to ask the vaccinator to use the arm on the other side to be on the safe side.

We would encourage everyone to get vaccinated when offered.

I hope this has been helpful.

  • Hello Martin

Thank you for your response. I have been speaking to a friend who is in a similar position to myself and she has had her Pfizer booster already. She had a side effect of a headache and ache in her arm, but nothing else.
I shall keep my appointment and ensure that the jab is in my left arm as my surgery was on the right.

    Thanks again. I appreciate it.
