Colposcopy and biopsy

Hello !

I had a smear test a few weeks ago , and this came back HPV positive and low grade dyskaryosis. I then had a colposcopy yesterday. They took a biopsy.

My head was else where yesterday and I didn't ask why this was , and unfortunately not much was explained to me.

can anyone tell me , why a biopsy has been taken , is this because the cells are still not obviously abnormal from view of the camera  , or this because they are obviously abnormal and are being tested further , or could it be either !

I am obviously just over thinking as anyone would !
the word biopsy is just very worrying.

thank you in advance!

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

I am sorry no one explained things properly yesterday, but hope everything else felt ok.

I think the biopsy will have been taken because an area of abnormal cells was seen, this would be routine and nothing of itself to to be alarmed by.  The idea of the biopsy is to check the depth of the abnormal cells in the thin layer of skin covering the cervix to decide if they need to be treated.

There is a classification system called CIN (cervical intraepithelial neoplasia which just means cell changes in the skin of the cervix). CIN can range from 1-3 depending on the depth of the abnormal cells and this has a bearing on who needs to be treated and who can be monitored for a while.  You can read more about CIN at the link below to our website,

    www.cancerresearchuk.org/.../what-are-abnormal-cervical-cells

Low grade dyskaryosis cell changes are often at the CIN1 level and can usually be safely monitored for a while, usually a year, to see if the HPV clears and the cells go back to normal as a result.

The main thing is that the biopsy is standard and nothing to worry about although I appreciate that the whole business of having an abnormal screening result can trigger a fair bit of stress and worry.
