Cervical Inflammation

Hi, I had my third smear after having two with HPV and no abnormal cells.  I'm on the mini pill and have had bleeding post covid jabs which the doctor had talked about and its not a worry.  However the nurse at my 3rd smear said my cervix looks inflamed, I'm a bit worried.. Not sure what could cause it apart from HPV but in my last smear she didn't see any inflamation

  • Hi and thanks for the post

You'll have to really wait for the results of this smear test to see if there are any abnormal cells or HPV, though you can't see these changes on the cervix by just looking at the area. She might have alluded to what many people have when they are on the pill - a cervical ectropion ( more about this here https://www.jostrust.org.uk/information/cervix/cervical-ectropion ) which is nothing to do with cancer, but can occur when the cells lining the inside of the cervix comes out onto the outer surface of the cervix. It  can appear red and inflamed.

Try and not worry about this as it's not unusual, but you can always ask the nurse for more information if you are concerned. The main thing though is to wait for the results of the smear.

    All the best
