Breast Changes

Hi

I have some breast changes in my left breast which I am concerned about. I have been to my GP and have been referred to our local breast unit, my appointment is not for another 4 weeks as they have a waiting list due to a backlog caused presumably by the covid restrictions, which is understandable.

i am 55 and have large breasts, my left breast has always been a little larger than the right but for a while now I've felt like the left is getting bigger, it impedes on my arm and gets in My way.

I noticed about 2 months ago that when I leaned forward the curve of my Breast seemed to flatten out, when I started to check myself more I have realised that when I let my breasts hang free and flex my sholders there is a dent at around the 8 o'clock position which has a deep starting point which I can place my finger tip in and it runs about 2 inches downwards towards my body.

I can not feel a specific lump when I examine myself physically  but I have noticed that when I support my breast with my hand and sandwich it with the other hand the left hand side of my breast feels quite firm to the touch compared with the other half of the breast.

When I examined myself sitting upright I can feel what I can only describe as a dividing line down the Center of my breast.

I do not feel anything under my arms so that's great but mostly I'm finding the waiting for my appointment so stressful I'm imagining all sorts.

Any advice or suggestions would be very much appreciated

Thank You

Shirley

  • Hello and thanks for your enquiry.

Most breast lumps/issues aren't found to be anything serious, but your GP has referred you to the breast clinic to get it checked out just to be on the safe side. Unfortunately, we cannot comment very specifically.

Waiting when you are worried can be very stressful but the majority of people who are referred to the breast clinic are found not to have breast cancer. The organisation Breast Cancer Now has information on what to expect when you’ve been referred to a breast clinic and you can read this information by clicking here.

Try and keep yourself busy and occupied as that can help whilst you wait for your appointment.

I hope you know more about your situation soon. If you would like to talk this through with one of the nurses directly, you can telephone us on 0808 800 4040.  We are here from Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm.

    Best wishes,

    Vanda
