I am sorry to hear you lost you mum to cancer at such a young age and imagine having symptoms must be a worry for you.

Try not to over think things too much if you can for now. As I am sure you are aware symptoms can be caused by so many different things and most of the time the cause won't be anything as sinister as a cancer.

You have done the right thing by seeing your doctor and they have run some blood tests. See what the results may say but if they are normal and these pains are continuing do go back and talk to your doctor. They may be able to arrange some more tests to try and figure out what the matter might be.

When cancer is in the family, people often assume that this greatly increases their risk of developing it, but this isn't necessarily so. Although the genes we inherit may influence our risk, this may not be by very much. No one is risk free and the risk of cancer increases for all of us as we get older. This is quite a complicated topic and it might be useful to look at our section explaining genes and inherited cancer risk at this link.

Cancer is described as a genetic disease because it is caused by mistakes or faults in the genes of in a single cell. But in most cases of cancer, these gene faults develop over someone's lifetime and are not inherited. Faulty cancer genes can be passed from one generation to the next, but they are uncommon.

This is something that your GP can advise you about so do discuss it with them when you next see them and do share your worries about getting cancer yourself.

Many people come on the forum looking for answers into their situation through the sharing of stories but it is important to remember everyone is different and just because they may share the same symptoms doesn't mean you will end up with the same reason as them.

Thanks - it's been over a week since the bloods have been taken and although they have been returned, the doctor hasn't called me yet (scheduled appointment for Tuesday). Assuming that I would have had an immediate call if something serious?

Unfortunately myself nor anyone else can know what the results may have shown but the doctor will go through these with you and the next course of action if these haven't shown anything up.

Hi Naomi 

In a bitter sweet situation now as just had a call from doctors saying bloods returned fine, after checking the following:

Serial

Inflammation 

Kidney

Liver

Blood Count

Tumour marker (came back as 2).

Although good to hear, still have ongoing pains :(
