lump in neck

Hi I went to the doctor a few months ago as I have been suffering with a very annoying cough, which I have had for over a year. I also have been experiencing tightness in the chest and a ringing in my ear.  I assumed I had asthma but the doctor noticed a lump in my neck.  So I was referred to a specialist who has now sent me for a thyroid blood test.  I have been told it is not a goiter but I need to have a biopsy and ultrascan to investigate further.  I am 54 and to say I am worried is an understatment.  I do not know how long it will take for this appointment and wondered if I should go private, but know the costs will be high which is also worrying. Could you please help in anyway as I am now unable to sleep with the worry.  I would be very grateful for a reply.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about the stressful time that you are having not helped by your symptoms that you have been going through for a while.

It is difficult without being involved with your care to know the different time lines. You saw the specialist, and you say that he wants to refer you for a biopsy. I am not sure when you saw him but if he felt that you needed an urgent biopsy I am sure that you will hear in a few days. You could chase the date of the biopsy with the specialist's secretary to see if you can find out more.

You could consider going privately and it maybe your specialist also has a private practice which you could find out from his NHS secretary. If you are going to go down the private route then do get an idea on what it is all going to cost first. The private secretary should be able to give you a break down of any costs.  It is probably only worth considering this route if it is going to be significantly quicker but it may be worth finding out first.

The other person that you could talk this through with is your GP. The hospital will have written to explain what your next steps are in finding out what is causing this lump.

They hospital may also  be waiting for the results of the thyroid blood test before they book the biopsy and ultrasound but I can't be sure. It is easy to assume that the lump is caused by cancer but there are other conditions that don't mean a cancer diagnosis so try not to overthink it all if you possibly can.

I do hope that you hear more soon but do chase it up if you don't.

If you would like to chat this through with one of the nurses on the helpline then do get back to us or give us a ring. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the Best,

    Catherine

  • Thank you so much for your advice, its just a relief to talk to someone. Yes I had the Thyroid blood test yesterday after seeing the consultant and he said he would also refer me for a biopsy and scan on my neck.  The problem is the timescale as our particular hospital is very slow so I think as you say I will chase it up with the secretary to see if she can give me an indication of how long the appointment will be. It's the not knowing whether the lump is cancerous or not?  Thank you again for giving me the advice, it is very much appreciated.
