Your dad would need to speak with his hospital team about trying for a TWOC (trial without catheter).

This can be done as a day admission to hospital sometimes, as described on the Prostate Cancer UK website,

but could also be done in the home, with the support of a District Nurse in place,

Patients have to drink plenty of fluids before and after to fill the bladder, to encourage urine flow after catheter removal,
