Unsure what has been found

Hello I am very confused. I went to breast clinic for a painful left breast which found a lump that has been biopsied. But the Dr said that the mammogram has shown something 'unreassuring' on my right breast and he has marked is as 5 for maglinant for an MRI. He would not explain what it was so no idea if it is a lump or suspected tissue changes or calcifications. He was not sympathetic or kind when I went into shock as I hadn't gone for that breast. I have my MRI on Monday but am so confused as to what they are looking for when the ultrasound showed nothing on the right side. So all I have in my head is ''5 means malignant' and no idea what they are looking for. I don't want to see him again. Any advice would be appreciated. I live alone, so my head is just screwed as I have no one.

  • Hi and thanks for your post

It's understandably scary knowing you need an MRI as there is some concern in the breast that needs further examination. It isn't really possible to say though until you've had the test  as to exactly what is going on.

A category 5 means that its highly suspicious of malignancy, but this is not a definite diagnosis. Sometimes, microcalcifications (which are salt like deposits and not cancer) can form a pattern seen on a mammogram that may indicate there may be something behind them which needs further investigation. This does not always mean cancer.

I can't say what they saw in your case, but an MRI should give some more information. You may still need further tests though to know exactly what it is they are looking at.

It's horrid waiting, but try and hold your nerve and not jump to any definite conclusions yet as you do need the test first. Try and not google at this moment, as it really won't be able to tell you what is going on in your own case and will keep you further in a very anxious state of mind. First wait and see what the MRI shows.

Do give us a ring if you would like to go over things - call us on Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best

  • Thank you so much for replying.  It means a lot xx

  • I rang the breast nurse. My biopsy on my left is benign. The mammogram has shown a mass in my upper right quadrant that she thinks will require a mammogram guided biopsy. Because there is a lot going on she thinks they will want to biopsy the left again to be sure. MRI Monday, MDT meeting thurs and she is making me an appt for late next week to find out next steps. She was fab but admitted it is strange case as nothing is correlating. She is also arranging my appt with someone else, so I don't have to see the Dr again. I am trying to keep it together but it's hard. I am 44. My lymph nodes are clear according to the ultrasound.
