Chemo Food

Hi had my first Chemo yesterday and told which foods to avoid. Daft question but I'm really wanting hubby to do click and collect for shopping due to Covid still about and wanting him to avoid packed supermarkets towards Xmas.  My only concern is fresh stuff being sat unrefridgerated for a few hours before collection.  Did click and collect last Xmas and prawns were off ruined Xmas starter.  Any advice appreciated would you consider it risky? I've been told to avoid Delhi counter food as standing and not vacuum packed.  Thanks x

  • Hi and thanks for posting

It can be worrying thinking about food safety, and if you are worried by click and collect, then for things like meat and dairy products, perhaps it would be best to go locally to a butchers or small supermarket where you are in and out quickly. Try and not get too worried about it as you can see and smell if certain foods have gone off.

Your hospital may have given you a sheet about diet whilst on chemotherapy, but if not , you may want to have a look as an example, at the one that Guys Hospital in London give here   . There are many different diet sheets that hospitals produce and this is just one example of many.

I do hope you tolerate the chemo well , but if you have any concerns or any symptoms you may be worried about, don't hesitate in contacting your chemo unit or specialist nurse at the hospital.

For your interest there is also some information here about living everyday  life while having chemotherapy

Do give us a call if you would like to go over any of this with one of us here on the helpline on Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Good luck with your treatment

    All the best
