Hard lymph node in groin, and tiny lymph node in arm pit.

Hi all,

I'm 21 years old, and back on the 8th I discovered a firm lymph node in my groin, also pretty immobile, and on the 12th I found a much smaller, lymph node in my arm pit.

I suffer from quite severe health anxiety, and always assume the worst.

I have got potential explanations for the swellings, but just wanted to ask for advice and hear others stories.

On the 28th October 2021, I got my COVID vaccine from Pfizer in the arm with my swollen armpit node, and on the same day I walked, quite hardly, into a pole which really hurt the right side of my groin, which is also the side of my bigger hard lymph node.

I've heard the vaccine can cause swollen lymph nodes, and I'm unsure if trauma can also damage, or cause an infection, causing them to swell, such as walking into the pole.

I'm just worried that the swellings are occuring now rather than a few days after, and the fact that the lumps are firm and immobile. Neither lump has grown since, although the node in my groin does seem to get irritated if I prod it. And I have also suffered no other symptoms like fatigue, breathlessness or the other typical B symptoms.

I'd also like to know if anyone can tell me other reasons lymph nodes can become hard and firm, other than malignancy? I can't find anything on google as it always just says "See if a GP if they are hard, firm or immobile" but never explains other reasons why these symptoms occur. Do nodes just swell differently for some people?

Please do reply to this with anything you can shed some light on, I'm not expecting to be diagnosed here, any information people know or stuff that their GPs have told them would be so appreciated. I've booked an appointment for this coming Friday, so I hope all goes well.

Thanks again :)

  • Hello there

I am sorry to hear you suffer from anxiety and appreciate how these lumps you can feel are worrying but try not to overthink the situation.

You are right that no one on here can tell you what may be going on and you are doing the best thing by seeing your GP. They will be able to check you out and arrange more tests if needed.

It seems you have been doing some research yourself into lymph nodes and whilst occasionally they are swollen because of a  cancer more commonly lymph nodes swell due to a current or past infection. You will also find some people if they touch their body they can feel their lymph nodes more easily and that is just normal for them.

Whilst I can understand you wanting to hear other peoples stories do bear in mind everyone is different and what happened to them may not be the same for you. Searching too deep for answers can in many cases be more harmful than helpful as this can lead to the wrong information and even more worry.

I hope you appointment goes well. Try and keep busy and your your mind on other things over the next few days as this can help manage the anxiety and pass the time .

    Best wishes

    Naomi
