Husband wont eat

Any suggestions on how to get my husband to take his shakes through his feeding tube. He has Tonsil cancer and will not take anything by his mouth and only will do half of the shakes required a day. He has a bad mucas drain that mskes him gag and get sick of everything he has put in his body. He is starting week 5 of radiation.

  • Hello there

I am sorry to hear about your husband and I imagine this must be a difficult time for you both.

As you know yourself it is important that your husband gets all the necessary nutrition and calories into his body to ensure he keeps up his energy levels and stays as well as possible during treatment. So it must be hard for you if he isn't following through with this.

Treatment can take it's toll on the body and it sounds like your husband is getting a bit fed up with it all do encourage him to talk to his specialist team about how he is feeling and about any symptoms or side effects he is having. They are in the best position to help him and give advice on things he could try to get him through.

Excess and thick mucus is unfortunately a common problem with this type of cancer and treatment and sometimes things can be prescribed to try and thin it down and make the mouth more comfortable in general. Some patients find diluting the supplement drinks with water can make them more palatable. Maybe your husband doesn't want to try this at this point in time which is fine as it is his choice, although he may need some encouragement to take the supplements through the feeding tube if he doesn't want to take them through the mouth for now.

Please get back if you need to or give us a call if you prefer to talk things over the phone, our number is 0808 800 4040 and were here Monday-Friday 9-5.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
