I found a painful lump on the inner part of my labia

So this is embarrassing, I started feeling a bit of discomfort earlier today, and did a self examine on myself.  I have found a lump on the inner labia, it's painful to the touch.   I am used to the painless bumps but this has me confused as I haven't really done anything to cause ingrown hairs or anything!

Any help would be deeply appreciated

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear that you are worried.  Unfortunately, we can't diagnose you but the lump on your labia sounds like it might be a bartholin cyst.  These are incredibly common non cancerous small lumps or cysts.  The NHS have written some information about them here.

You can try sitting in a tepid bath. Sometimes applying a warm flannel to the area can help them disperse. You can also try applying some antiseptic cream there for a few days to help.

If it doesn't clear up then I would have a chat with your GP.  This is usually done by a telephone consultation.  They will be able to assess whether they need to see you to look at it properly.  It does not sound like like anything serious, but we would always say to anyone with new symptoms to get them checked out.

You are more then welcome to give one of the nurses a ring on the helpline if you would like to discuss any of this.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

    Vanda
