Breast lumps for 2 years!

When I was 19 so 2 years ago I found a lump in my boob! Immediately saw the doctor and was told it was hormones! I was not convinced and waited a while to be referred! By the time I was referred my mental health had been destroyed by waiting and wondering! After 6 months of waiting I see a specialist and she said I needed a scan and blood test! I was told it was nothing to worry about but 2 years down the line I'm having breast pain and the lump is still present! As well as severe lockjaw! So I'm just now freaking out all over again and I called the docs and they said someone would call me this week it's been 2 weeks since they told me that! Not only am I shocked by the lack of urgency in lumps in younger woman but my mental health is just spiralling out of control now!

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about the worry you have for a breast lump but you have done the right thing in getting this checked out. Waiting to speak with your GP is taking longer and I am afraid to say that this happening across the UK. But it might be a good idea to call the GP surgery again to find what is happening.

You tell us that this breast lump is the same one you had 2 years ago and this was checked by a breast specialist after you had scans and blood tests, therefore this is very unlikely to be cancer. Also in most situations breast cancer does not cause pain.  I am afraid this is as much as I ( or anyone else here) can say about your situation so speaking with your GP will be helpful.

I also want to tell you that breast cancer is uncommon in women of your age and is more common in women after the age of 60.

To help you get through this worrying time I hope you have support from friends and family. You might also find it helpful to look at the NHS site called Every Mind Matters as this can help you work through any anxieties you have.

Please do get back to us if you need too, you may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
