Subungual biopsy. (nail)

Hi my biopsy is on Monday. I'm super nervous and was wondering what people's experiences were post biopsy. The dermatologist said it was quite unpleasant and painful, so you can understand my nerves. Just wondering can I drive etc..

It's under my thumbnail.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I hope your appointment goes well today.

It may be bit uncomfortable to drive for a few days but do ask the dermatologist when you see them today how long it might be before you can drive again. I am sure that they will suggest some painkillers to help relieve any discomfort.

They will have information at the hospital about how long the dressing needs to stay on and when you will be seen next. I am sure that they will go through all of this before you leave.

They may suggest that you keep the area clean and dry to prevent any infection. Protecting your thumb by wearing large washing  up gloves or warm gloves when you go out may help. Do ask the nurses before you leave what they suggest. They will be able to give you instructions about what you can and can't do.

Unfortunately as it is such a rare cancer there is very little information about this condition. Until they get the results of your biopsy they will not be able to confirm whether or not it is a subungual melanoma. All suspected cancers are discussed in a formal meeting where the pathologist (doctor who looks at the biopsy under a microscope) meet to discuss your case with the dermatologist and any other doctors involved in your care.

If at any stage you would like to give the nurses a ring on the helpline then you are more then welcome to do so. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the Best,

    Catherine

  • Thank you so much for your response.

It was quite painful yesterday and today it is throbbing but thankfully not as extreme. I've to wait six weeks but if it is anything sinister I will find out sooner.

I will let you know either way!

    Take care.

  • Hi ElleK,

I hope you don't have to wait 6 weeks that's a long time to wait :(

I have a biopsy on my toenail next Monday (22nd) and I've been told 4 to 6 weeks for results but I am really dreading waiting that long.

I will keep my fingers crossed its good news for you

    Xx

  • Still waiting for results. Next week hopefully. I found it a painful biopsy. They gave me no pain relief so I had to ring my GP and get proper pain relief, which I took for a week. It's healing great. Half my nail is gone and barely a scar from the nail matrix. I wish you all the best. I'll keep you posted. Best of luck.
  • You are so kind, thank you for your reply. The lack of information is quite frustrating but as you said we won't know until we really know!!

    Thanks again x
