Stomach issues, blood in stool, niggling, twinging, pain

Hi,

looking for some advice really and looking to see if any one has ever had anything similar to my situation. I've posted a few times on this page but I'm at my wits end now and feel so stuck.

Around 4 weeks ago I started to get a burning sensation in my right side, I went to the doctors who initially thought this was a kidney infection. I was giving antibiotics. The burning sensation has never came back. I then started having a major change in bowel movements, along with blood in stool and on toliet paper. I keep getting my right sided niggling pain and gramps in my lower abdomen all right sided, along with pain in my hip and back.

I was sent for the urgent referral for a colonoscopy. 4 days later I was sent a fit test. I sent this away and got a NEGATIVE  result. I have now received a letter advising because this test was negative they no longer want to investigate this!

my doctor whom I've been in contact with over the last four weeks had advised before the referral she suspected this could be some sort of inflammatory bowel disease but we would have to get the colonoscopy to rule anything out and know the correct answer. Im now baffled that because the fit test has came back negative they no longer want to investigate all though I'm still getting these symptoms.

I called the doctor today to advise I'm not happy about this and I'm still getting all these pains and niggles, constant change in bowel movements, blood and back and side pain. Along with bloated ness. She has advised there's no more she can do as she has made a referral and this is what they have responded with. I'm getting frustrated because there is something going on and I want answers.

4 weeks ago when this started I was two weeks late for my period and I had multi pregnancy tests and blood tests taken all came back negative. I went to a&e as the pain was so bad and they had given me an ultra sound ful abdomen and pelvis all came back clear along with full blood count.

the gp has now advised that I have to wait this out and see if the pain subsides. I'm really not happy about this. I'm a 26 year female normally fit and healthy no underlying health conditions and a good weight for my height. I can't continue to live with this pain as it's affecting my every day life.

Has anyone ever had anything similar if so what was the outcome? Also can anyone else recommend what I do next? Just feel so stuck and fobbed off by gps.

thank you x

  • This is mad, you need the colonoscopy, if for anything to rule out anything bad and to stop you going mad with worry.

If I hadn't kept on going to see drs I wouldn't be here now. I was being treated for IBS for months before bowel cancer was found and that was only because I went to A&E in the end.

Can you go see different GP's at your practice and insist. If not I would turn up at A&E

Good luck, it needs doing, if it is anything bad you can't turn back the clock!

Let us know how you get on, feel free to send me a friend request if you have questions.

  • I know, this is my worry. I've spoke to several gps in the last week. Apparently on the letter there's a number that I can phone if I am still having the symptoms. But I said to my doctor is there nothing more you can do from this end. I'm honestly getting so worried as I feel things are just getting left.

I think I'm just going to keep getting on to my gps about this. She had referred me for a rushed appointment for a colonoscopy now she's changed her mind that the fit test has came back clear. I'm not happy with that. She said it could have been IBD but again you need a colonoscopy to confirm anything. I'm at my wits end honedtly. It's so draining living with this every single day and known that I'm not getting the support from gps that I need are making me ten times worse.

when this happened 4 weeks ago I went to a&e 3 times in one weekend with the pain and was just giving strong medication each time and eventually got a pelvic and abdomen ultra sound which all came back clear. But that doesn't show bowels! My doctors also advised after this to not go to a&e as they will not give anyone a colonoscopy you have to be treated as an out patient. So I just don't know where to stand :(

can I ask what symptoms you had? Also what made your doctor end up getting you the colonoscopy in the end?

I just feel so stuck with this .

    thank you xx

  • Hello Girl26 and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to learn that you have some unexplained symptoms, especially the pain, and can understand this being a worry. Bear in mind that bowel cancer isn't common in your age group so another explanation is more likely.

In the context of assessing bowel symtpoms, FIT tests can be used in considering who needs to have an urgent (two week wait) referral for suspected bowel cancer. My understanding is that when a GP ordered FIT test is negative, the risk of bowel cancer is extremely low which is reassuring, but of course for anyone with ongoing symtpoms this doesn't tell them what is going on.

When a FIT test is negative GPs can still contact the local specialist lower gastrointestinal team and get their input and they can also arrange a non urgent referral, so I think this is something to ask about however I don't know how long it would take to be seen.

As well as being horrible, pain can be an alarming symptom, but lots of conditions can cause it so try not to let your mind dwell exclusively on cancer.

I think it would be a good idea to talk things over with your GP again and ask them to explain more about the FIT test results and what the next step is to getting a diagnosis. It may help to speak to another GP at the same practice.

I hope they can help and that things improve for you. Give us a ring if you want to talk anything over on Freephone 0808 800 4040, we are around from 9-5, weekdays.

    Wishing you the best,

    Julia

  • Hi I'm wondering if you ever got any answers to this? I've been going back and forth for almost a year. But my symptoms come then I go to docs to be told all ok. Then they go for a few months then back and same thing.

I can't say it's actual pain, it doesn't stop anything but it just doesn't feel right - but everything you've said is so similar.

I was send for a scan of my ovary's to check and all ok - my fit test was clear so they won't do colonoscopy. But the ultrasound said all normal for gynae related issues - really don't know what else this could be.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I can imagine how frustrating this must be for you when you say that you have symptoms that come and go and you can't get to the bottom as to what is causing them.

The doctors can only work on the information that they get from the results of any tests and examinations that they perform.

I can only suggest that you keep a record of any symptoms and any triggers that may set these symptoms off.

We are not able to diagnose anyone on the forum but if you are not doing so already then do look at how you can improve your general health, keeping a food diary, taking regular exercise and maintaining a healthy weight can all help. Have a look at the information on the NHS website here

I do hope that you feel better soon. If your symptoms continue then do go back to your GP.

    All the Very Best,

    Catherine
