Letrozole after radiotherapy

Hi I wonder if someone can help me? I had surgery for breast cancer in October and and will be having radiotherapy soon. My consultant said I will be given letrozole for 10-years but I'm wondering why this hasn't started now before radiotherapy? Other women seem to be prescribed it after surgery so I'm just wondering why this is?

  • Hi and thanks for posting

There doesn't seem to be hard and fast rules as to when to start taking letrozole, some people may be advised to take them after surgery and throughout the course of radiotherapy treatment, others will be told to wait till after it has finished. It's not unusual to start letrozole after the end of radiotherapy treatment - many women will only start taking it after treatment has finished.

There has been some research into this, and the conclusion was that letrozole could be safely given during radiotherapy, as there had been a query whether there would be a difference in outcome both cosmetically on the breast, and whether it would also affect the aim of treatment to use both at the same time. More studies may still be needed, but currently, there is no general consensus and it's use will differ around the country.

Do have a word with your specialist or breast care nurse if this is something that is concerning you though, as they are the ones involved in your care.

    All the best,

    Wanda
