What to drink while doing chemotherapy after bc surgery

Hi I had my 1st chemo session yesterday after having lumpectomy surgery last month i know it advises to keep ul with fluids is it ok to drink lucozade or should it be certain drinks throughout treatment

  • Hi

I was told as long as you get fluids in thsts what matters. Ideally they want it to be as much water as possible for your kidneys but I found because of the awful taste in mouth I couldn't drink much plain water.

I found chocolate milk went down ok. Lemon squash or fizzy lemon and lime. Tea tasted unpleasant and I don't drink coffee.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi [@shazzababe]‍

I agree with [@Bellelouise]‍ - the important thing is to keep drinking, and that means drinking what you enjoy and, frankly, what you can face.  That can change from cycle to cycle.  I haven't been able to face tea or coffee since my first chemo, and I can't stand the taste of water.

Personally I have found it helpful to keep flavoured cordials handy (initially elderflower, currently lime) and mildly dilute the water so it tastes palatable without adding too many calories to my diet, because I am already nibbling a lot!  I generally keep a glass of lime flavoured water on the go all day, to encourage myself to hydrate.  I've found coconut water from the supermarket chiller section slips down easily and has health benefits, including (apparentlyj helping relieve any constipation caused by the anti-sickness meds.  I also start each day with a smoothie, to get some fruit into me and tick off the first of my five a day!  So you might want to mix it up a bit, but within that mix some lucozade and whatever else you fancy sounds fine.

    best of luck xx

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear you are having treatment and hope it goes well for you.

Drinks such as Lucozade are fine to have during chemotherapy. Many people find that there taste buds are affected with chemo and sometimes it can be a struggle to find food and drinks that are tolerable so it is very much a matter of trial and error in finding the right ones for you to keep your fluid intake and energy levels up.
