Multiple simultaneous renal cancers

My husband had a CT scan for another problem and multiple solid tumours have been shown on both kidneys. The largest being 4cm.

5 months after their discovery we have seen the urologist who says they are malignant cancers and is repeating the scan and arranging a renal biopsy of the larger tumour, with a view to partial nephrectomy and ablation.

I have googled this situation but only found the rare benign oncocytoma that exists in this multiple form however the urologist never mentioned this possibility

edit: further research has provided me with more info and I now know most types of rcc can be multi focal and bilateral.
Now hoping they are papillary as the prognosis appears better.

  • Hi and thanks for your post

I'm sorry to hear about your husband's diagnosis and can imagine this may have come as quite a shock, especially as cancer was noted on both kidneys.

Though rare, this can happen, but it's going to be a case of waiting for the results of the biopsy to know any more information, as otherwise it would be guessing and looking at information that may well not be relevant, causing more anxiety.

It must be hard waiting still for more information having already had a 5 month wait and I can appreciate this is not an easy time.

It may be best to wait to see what the results show and the type of renal cancer, as it's difficult to comment any more without this information.

Once the results are through, please do get back to us or call us on the helpline if you would like to talk things through - the number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

I do  hope you get to hear soon

    All the best

    Wanda

  • Thankyou.I know you are right but we have just been through sigmoidectomy for colon cancer which is when it was discovered, so emotions have been high for so long.
