Weight gain with Tamoxifen

Hello

Post breast cancer (chemo, right breast mastectomy, radiotherapy, no reconstruction etc)

Am on daily Tamoxifen and daily morning Iasibon (for bone strength).

Since really getting into the groove of daily tamoxifen over the last year I have put on about a stone and a half.

Where before breast cancer I ate relatively healthily but never craved food, I now regularly think about food.  I do not binge eat but I eat much more regularly than I did.

Is Tamoxifen associated with weight gain?

Does Tamoxifen contain steriods or steroid-type effects?

I have seen studies saying tamoxifen is not associated with weight gain but is that right?

Either way, what should I do to lose weight?  I dont feel overweight exactly but I am the heaviest I have ever been and it has only happened since I started on tamoxifen.

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

Tamoxifen can cause fluid retention, which may affect your weight. There is no clear link between Tamoxifen and weight gain as such. Tamoxifen does not contain steroids, and its main action is to block uptake of oestrogen.

Increased fat around the abdomen can often be largely due to the effects of a menopause state, and altering hormone levels.

There is useful information on weight loss and free resources on the NHS website links here,

    I hope this is useful,
