  • Hi Courtney

It's not that unusual to still remain HPV positive and to have some abnormal cells still, even though you have had the area previously treated. Some people take longer for their immune systems to deal with HPV and it can take a few years, especially if your immune system is a bit low or you smoke. By attending for all your smears though, the point of the screening programme is to prevent people from getting to the point where any cancerous cells are picked up. Your next smear should be in 6 months time.

Showing moderate changes or even severe changes does not mean that any cancerous cells have been identified. At colposcopy they may do a biopsy to double check what stage the cells are at and if they stay at moderate or severe change, more treatment, for example like another  LLetz procedure, may be done - there's more about treatments here for abnormal cells   and here about HPV

Please do ring if you would like to go over any of this - the number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

I hope you don't have long to wait before your colposcopy appointment

    All the best

    Wanda
