Hpv & borderline/mild changes on cervix

Hi everyone !!!

I went for my routine smear test last month and my results have cane back today they have found HPV in my body and borderline to mild changes on my cervix... i have to go for a colposcopy for them to gave a closer look. I'm in complete panic mode. I'm 30 and all my other smears have been fine.

Has anyone had a similar result my anxiety is going through the roof!!

Thanks

  • Hi,

I had the same results around seven years ago. I also went for a colposcopy ( exactly like a smear but with a camera on the end it was completely painless ). I was told they couldnt see anything sinister and my body would clear up the HPV on its own. They were right, seven years on and all clear smears.

Hope this has put your mind at ease

  • This is so good to hear , I've got myself into a right state about it thinking the worst ... i think I'm more concerned at the fact they have said I was tested for high risk human papillomavirus and its shown that this was there I've googled ( big mistake ) basically saying it's C

    Thanks for your response

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

Please don't worry too much. Your result does not mean you have cancer and many other women will have had these type of results.

Some types of HPV are now looked for as part of the NHS Cervical Cancer Screening Programme because it is the cause of cervical cells becoming abnormal. Going to the colposcopy clinic means your cervix will be checked to see if the abnormal cells are still there. If they are there they may be removed or if the doctor or nurse sees them as low grade or borderline then you will need to have your cervix looked at in 1 years time to make sure they have gone. This is because your immune system will get rid of the HPV.  We have information about having an abnormal cervical result on our website, you can see it here

Having the cervical cancer screening test, when invited, means that you are reducing the risk of getting cervical cancer.  Also by doing this research shows that cervical cancer is now a less common type of cancer.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline

  • Hi,

we had our letter on the same day. I live in Wales and my letter just said abnormal smear. Freaked right out!! In a mess for a week. I phoned the docs they did not have my results, phoned the screening Wales. The lady could hear I was so worried that she had a nurse to phone me. I had the phone call with my results being hpv positive and boarderline changes on the fence she said. I was so relieved, yet still having moments of panic!! My appointment is not until Dec 29th at the colosopy I am ok with that as the nurse said that's fine. This forum has put my mind at rest and speaking to the nurse. She said we are bottom scale of the changes and need to be checked.
Hope this helps as you have all helped me.
