Found a lump

I found a lump a few weeks ago I went to the doctors she examined my breasts said there was indeed a lump but I shouldn't worry because it isn't where usual cancer is and that we will follow up in a month, the lump is in my right breast and to the left of my nipple my mum was diagnosed with breast cancer years ago and had it removed with out complications I am still concerned about the lump and it's slightly painful do I need to push for further tests or listen to the doctor?

  • I would ask if you can be referred about this as if you are at all concerned, a month is a long time to wait. For peace of mind,if nothing else, could you request a referral?

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

Finding a lump can cause a lot of worry. I can understand having a mum diagnosed with breast cancer can increase this worry.

It is easy to think that because your mum had breast cancer you are much more likely to get it. This is not always the case. A lot will depend on what age your mum was when she was diagnosed. There is some information on inherited breast cancer which you can see here

There are other reason for benign (not cancer)  lumps to develop such as a fibroadenoma  or a cyst which you can read about here

We can't diagnose you but do remember that GP'S are experienced at looking at  breast lumps and know what warning signs to look out for. Breast cancer is also not usually painful. This may be connected to a change in hormonal levels but of course I can't be sure.

Do get back in touch with your GP earlier if you remain concerned. Sometimes it can help to be reviewed in a breast clinic just to put your mind at rest.

I do hope that this helps. if you want to have a chat with one of the nurses on the helpline then do give us a ring.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best Wishes,

    Catherine
