Should it be an urgent referral?

I went to see my GP because of bleeding in between periods, bleeding after sex and pelvic pain. He asked me to get a blood test, referred me for an ultrasound and asked me to come back for an internal examination.  I'm still waiting for the blood test and ultrasound but following the internal examination he told me there were lumps on my cervix and discharge. He said he would refer me to either gynecology or colposcopy depending which would be quicker.  It's now been a week and I've not heard anything. I assumed from what he said that it would be an urgent 2 week referral.  Would my symptoms warrant that or is it a non-urgent referral? I have previously had a LLETZ procedure as a result of a CGIN biopsy result 16 years ago.

  • Hi and thanks for your post

You could check with the GP as to whether this was an urgent referral or not. You might hear in the next week , as because of the pandemic, the 2 week referrals are taking longer in some parts of the country, depending on how overstretched the hospitals are, and with clinics catching up.

I can't say whether your symptoms warrant an urgent referral - this would depend on the GP and the internal examination. It's possible that they are being cautious due to your past history.

Have a word with the GP and how long they would want you to wait. Alternatively, you could call hospital appointments line and see if they can give you some idea of waiting times.

I hope you get to hear soon

    All the best
