I have just had a masctomy last week, and it is almost my first week post surgery. I have an infection , any suggestions off how to manage this would be helpful.

Hello and thanks for posting
I am sorry to hear you needed to have a mastectomy and are now recovering with a wound infection.
I assume you have been seen by a doctor about this and have been given antibiotics to clear up the infection. Usually the breast care nurses will also give advice to patients about what to do and not to do in terms of the dressing and management of the wound following the operation. Often the doctors like the dressing to stay in place and not be tampered with too much for the first few days if possible to minimise infection. But of course if the dressing is wet it sometimes needs to be changed sooner and the nurses involved in your care should be able to direct you about this.
We have information about what to expect after a mastectomy here including follow up care here and the possible problems after surgery including infection here on our website.
It is important to allow the body time to heal so take time to rest and listen to what your body is telling you and don't over do it. Try and eat a healthy and balanced diet to help speed up this process and let your team know of any other symptoms or worries you have during this time.
I hope the rest of your recovery goes smoothly but do get back to them if you need to. You are also welcome to call the nurse helpline to talk things over the phone if you prefer. Our number is 0808 800 4040 and we're here Monday-Friday 9-5.
All the best
Naomi
Thank you for coming back to me. I visited the breast clinic today and it appears there was a reaction to the surgical tape that they put on. This has now been removed. There is small build up of fluid, which I am told, this is expectated. I will keep an eye on it as I did not have a drain after the operation. I have got to say this experience has been very scary but the service from all of the hospital staff have been amazing .
