Bloating and severe discomfort

I had lung surgery in 2020 keyhole for early stage cancer.  Ever since surgery I've had severe digestive problems, that I had never experienced prior to surgery.  Not just bloating, but this odd sort of ring of what we\d call fat above the tummy area and just under the ribs.  It doesn't feel like normal fat from eating too much of the wrong foods, in fact I eat less than I did before surgery and a couple of times a week only have home made soup with bread for dinner and toast for breakfast, so it's not related to how I eat.  I've gone up 2 dress sizes so all my clohtes no longer fit, and I have never in 70yrs been overweight.  I wonder if it had anything to do with the drugs, oxycodone?  I know for example that some psychiatric drugs can cause massive weight gain.  Could my digestive problem relate to my condition after surgery?  I couldn't eat for a couple of weeks, just cheese and biscuits in the evening.  I got pneumonia following surgery and a collapsed lung so had no appetite.  I lost a great deal of weight and was being given handfuls of medication every 4 hours which really damaged my stomach, so am wondering is it a combination of these things?  Anyone had any thoughts on this?  My GP tells me it's GERD, I don't think so.  I'm in discomfort almost every day, my back hurts from the build up of either food or gas causing the bloating.  I'm despairing of anyone in the medical profession coming up with an answer and from what I read here, this is quite common!

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about the pain and discomfort that you are feeling and can imagine that this is having a huge impact on your life.

Without being involved in your care it is difficult to say whether the cause could be related to all your different treatments that you have been having over the years or to something else such as a GERD which is what the GP thinks.

Unfortunately it is a case of working out what food triggers your different symptoms.

I am not sure whether  it would be possible to get a referral to a dietitian as it is helpful having someone assess your diet and help give you tips on different meal plans.

The NHS have written some information on bloating and general discomfort which you can read about here

Penny Brohn who is a nutritionist runs a series of talks about diet and nutrition which you may find helpful to join. Have a look at the information here

This does not work for everyone. I am also not sure where you are living in the country but you may want to tap in to the support on health and nutrition which are sometimes run at Maggie Centres up and down the country. Have a look at their details here

I can imagine how frustrating this must be for you. We also have some information on problems with diet and there are various resources which you  may find helpful to look at here

You have posted in ask the nurses but you may find that if you post in a different section you may have more responses from other members on the forum.

I do hope that your symptoms settle down soon or that you find a diet that works better for you.

If you would like to chat to one of the nurses on the helpline then you are more then welcome to give us a ring.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the Best,

    Catherine

  • Thanks for your reply, it's appreciated.  I think for sure milk just in coffee is not tolerated well anymore, I noticed this morning I couldn't finish my coffee, made me feel nauseous, so I'll keep an eye on other foods that I eat prior to experiecing the bloating.  Many thanks
