Really worried

I have had abnormal cells in my cervix since my first smear, when I was 18. I am now 40. During my years I have had a lot of missed smears, dur to the fact I didn't realise how serious it could be and some because of fear because I was having to get all my smears yearly and I didn't want to go through that every year.  Around 12 years ago I went to the hospital to have the cells burned away. I got my next smear a year later, the results were fine and I thought that was it and for the first time I was told I could wait the normal 3 years till my next smear. Reading online that after the procedure things usually go back to normal. I started missing appointments because I have a bad memory and forget. I got a smear around 7 months  before the first lockdown. It was back to abnormal. I was told if my next one was abnormal then I would need to be referred to hospital again. They gave me an appointment 6 months down the line. That also came back abnormal. My referral to the hospital was put off because covid hit. I was told to go back in a year. I didn't because appointments were still off, so I thought what's the point. I will just be put off again. Had my last smear a couples of weeks ago. Still waiting on the results. About 2 months ago I found a small lump under my armpit. I searched it online and read it could be a cyst. So I didn't bother with it much. But around 2 weeks ago I found a second lump in the same armpit. Now I am starting to worry that I have been too laid back and the problem can be more serious. I have a doctors appointment which is 2 weeks away. I am now really worried and I can't stop worrying imagining the worst. Can anyone who has been in this situation help put my mind at rest. Thank you

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I see that you are waiting for the results of your latest cervical screening test and that you are concerned that this could come back abnormal. You are also worried about two lumps that have popped up under your arm.

It is good to know that you went to have your cervical screening done as having this is the best way to reduce the risk of having cervical cancer. Having an abnormal result, if you do have one this time, does not necessarily mean you will have cancer.

If you do have an abnormal result it might mean you need to have a repeat test done in 6 months or you may need to go to the colposcopy clinic to get checked out and possibly have treatment.  I realise that if this happens it is worrying but please remember that for most people this still does not mean they will necessarily have cancer.  We have information about having an abnormal cervical test result on our website, you can see it here

I think it is very unlikely that the lumps under your arm are anything to to do with your cervix, even if you were diagnosed with cervical cancer. I say this because cervical cancer does not usually spread to lymph nodes under the arm.

It is good to know that you are getting the lumps under your arm checked out. In most cases lumps like these will not be caused by cancer but may have something to do with a cyst or infection. Getting them checked out is the best thing to do.

I hope you will be okay. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
