Has anyone had a endoscopy with propofol for sedation?

Hi

My consultant has told me he wants me to try the endoscopy again this time with propofol for sedation and I have read some bad things about this drug and that you can stop breathing from it.

Has anyone had propofol for a endoscopy and if so am I worry too much about it. will i wake up from it.

please advice

thank you

  • I had it for a different procedure-no issues at all. Just went to sleep and woke up very shortly afterwards feeling absolutely fine.

  • Hello, and thank you for posting.

To reassure you consultant anaesthetists have to do many years of training to be able to do the job that they do.   Please be reassured that each patient is individually assessed, taking into account factors like general health, so that they know how much of a drug like Propofol to use.  You are also very closely monitored by them and the team throughout the procedure.

Take care, and I think that before your endoscopy it would be good for you to let them know about your anxieties, as it will help them understand you and how you will be feeling on the day.

    Sarah.

  • Hi Sarah,

    thank you for your message.

I have e-mailed my consultant to see if there was anyway to avoid the endoscopy with propofol but he said no.  So I have asked him to reassure me that I will wake up from the sedation and the procedure.

To be honest I am not a 100% certain that propofol  is a safe drug and I have read a lot of negative comments which is putting me off having it, I think at the moment I don't feel like I could have it I would probably just be panicky on the day.

but i am going to wait and see what my consultant as to say.  So I am keeping an open mind to changing my mind if they can guarantee my safety and that I will wake up from propofol sedation.

    Thank you again

    Lindsey
