Lung cancer with brain mets

My husband was diagnosed with nsclc in feb 2020. It has spread to his brain and his adrenal gland. He's been having 3 weekly chemo for over a year with a good response. He's also had 2 rounds of gamma knife surgery. His latest brain scan has shown that he has now developed 3 more brain tumors, which his brain tumor dr wants to treat with more gamma knife.
I haven't heard anything from his oncology team as this is all very recent so I'm asking if anyone has any experience of this? Does this mean the chemo isn't working anymore and will stop? Or will they offer him something else? He's 48.

  • Hello Ashy1,

Thank you for your post. I am very sorry to hear about your husband's situation.

I am afraid I cannot tell you if your husband's treatment will be changed, that will need to come from his oncology team. What could happen is that they may want to understand if the cancer has also progressed in the rest of the body, so they may ask your husband to have a whole body scan (if he has not had one already) to see if it has.  Although the tumours in the head have progressed this does not mean that the cancer has necessarily done this in the rest of the body. Understanding what is happening in all of the body (including the head) may help the oncology team know if a change of treatment is necessary.

This must be a difficult situation so hopefully the oncology team will be in contact soon. You could also contact the lung cancer nurse involved in your husband's care to talk about this.

If you have not seen it please do look at our information about the treatment of advanced lung cancer, it is on our website here   For information about support please click here

I hope you know more about your husband's situation soon. You would be welcome to get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
