MRI showed lump on cervix

Just a bit of background. My mum has MS, double amputee of her legs and also has dementia. She has been bed bound for 4 years now.
She was sent for an MRI scan which has showed a lump on her cervix.
because of her conditions and she doesn't recover well from anaesthesia the doctors are reluctant to do surgery. Is there anyway to determine if for sure the lump is cancer?
they can't easily do a Colposcopy as she doesn't sit still. Any advice would be much appreciated. Has anyone been in a similar situation? Thanks

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear of your mum's situation and appreciate this must be a difficult time for the family.

Unfortunately in order for a diagnosis to be made often more than one test is needed and often a biopsy (tissue sample) is needed of the suspected lump. In the cervix this would either need to be taken as you say through colposcopy or through surgery, and it seems the doctors are hesitant to do this at the moment due to the risks.

There may be others on here who can share their experiences and I am sure they will if they can but do bear in mind everyone is different and the options can vary between patients.

I suggest you have another conversation with the team involved in your mum's care to find out if there is anything else they can do to diagnose this lump.

Please get back if you have further questions or if you would like to call the nurse helpline on 0808 800 4040 you are very welcome to. We're here Mon-Fri 9-5.

I hope you know more soon.

    Take care

    Naomi
