FIT positive, worried about colonoscopy

Hi,

Im 31yr old female and got a FIT positive test (>300 apparently) on Fri, so was referred on 2WW and should be contacted soon. The GP said it is very likely that I will need a colonoscopy. I had a colonoscopy about 5 years ago and it was such a exruciatingly painful horrible experience I am so worred about having it again, and I'm not sure I would agree to it.

Are there any alternatives to this, or anything I could request to make it less painful, a specific painkiller? Or is it possible to be under anasthetic for this? I did have sedation last time.

Thank you for your advice.

Jen

  • Hello Jen and thank you for your post,

When you speak with the doctor or nurse about your FIT test result and any symptoms you have do tell them about your previous experience of having a colonoscopy.  If it is recommended that you have one then do ask what can be done to make it a more comfortable experience for you. For example sedation may be given to make the person having the colonoscopy more sleepy , and or breathing in gas and air can help to. Do talk with them so that they can explain what can be done. You can read more about having a colonoscopy on the NHS website here .A colonoscopy is often the best type of investigation to have to find out what is happening inside the large bowel. This is because it allows the specialist team to see inside and they can also take biopsies if an abnormal area is seen. However do ask if another test could be used, you can read more about other tests here

I hope this has been helpful and that you will be okay. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
