Salivary Gland Tumours

I'm a 19 year old female and 10 months ago I felt a lump on my parotid gland. Had bloods taken to check it wasn't an infection and then I was sent for an ultrasound. Ultrasound said it was too small for a biopsy, however a week after the ultrasound I found another lump in my submandibular gland. I saw the ENT consultant and they have refered me for another ultrasound and a biopsy of the second and bigger lump. I've now started getting aching pains in my neck and I'm really anxious about the results of the biopsy. Is it likely that because I have multiple tumours it is melignant?

  • Hi,

I'm sorry your on here asking for advice.lots of people are here for similar reasons-however everyone's journey is a little different.

Biopsy results usually take 2weeks to come back- the waiting game is the hardest. Not all lumps and bumps turn out to be dodgey but I'm glad your on the ball and been checked out quickly.  Can get large nodes with infection. Did your Gp say your bloods are ok ?
Have you received a letter for your result appoitment.?
write down questions you may want to ask ?

You can get aches and pains afte biopsy as you've just been jabbed at. Plus your doctors been prodding and poking at your neck too.

  • Hello and thanks for your post

Cancer would be very rare in someone of your young age. Salivary gland cancers are also rare but when they do occur they usually affect people over the age of 60.

It's good that you have seen the ENT specialist and they have referred you for an ultrasound scan and a biopsy. Lumps or enlarged lymph glands can be caused by infection even sometimes when a person feels well. They can often take several weeks for them to subside and sometimes they never go back to their original size.

I know waiting when you are worried is stressful but hopefully you will know more soon.

I hope everything turns out to be okay

    Best wishes,

    Celene
