Please help me - cysts or worse?

For 6 months now I have been getting breast pain on and off in my right breast. I find it gets worse around two weeks before my period so I'm finally starting to accept it could be hormone related. However, I have had really bad anxiety about it since it began and I've had 3 doctors look at it, and one breast specialist after I was finally referred to the breast clinic around 6 weeks or so ago. All of the doctors told me that there is no lumps and the pain is hormonal and that the majority of my pain is actually chest wall pain as I've been diagnosed with costochondritis (inflammation of the ribs). One doctor did say he believed he could feel some fibrous breast tissue which is normal in my age (I'm 25). I also have naturally very large breasts so I do worry something could be missed.

Anyway, things were getting better for me until a few days ago when the pain started again and after a lot of poking around I've found what I believe to be a very small lump. My partner says it feels more like hard tissue but I think it feels more like a lump as it feels different to the surrounding tissue. When I push my breast up as far as possible, I can feel a hard and very painful to touch lump. When I press my breast normally, it's much harder to find but still there and it's in the place that has been hurting these last few months.

could it be a cyst or a fibroadenoma? Or is it likely to be worse? im sick with worry. I have no history of cancer in my family but I'm honestly convinced it's worse case scenario. It feels hard and somewhat moveable (I think) but it's hard to tell. It's small and I'm due on my period in just over a week and I'm wondering if it's a hormone related problem?

Thank you for reading this far x

  • Hi, sorry to but in as you've asked for nurse advice -I'm jot a nurse but have some experience with boobs (got large ones and lump in mine too)

im reading your question above as though you havnt been seen in breast clinic yet if not then...

Your GP Should have referred you to a breast clinic ( this should be within two weeks ) I would personally chase up your appoitment. Not to alarm you but just the waiting time of 6weeks will be driving you insane.
Phone breast screening department directly-they should have your referral - and should have some idea of when your appt is. Ask for a cancellation too.

You could also speak to the PALs team. Patient advice liason team -highlight your waiting time and your worried.

If you have been seen and your have a different issue than previous make an appoitment with your GP for a a new referral. Did you get mamogram ??

  • Hello and thanks for your post

Breast pain is common and breast lumps at your age are more likely to be due to hormonal changes, cysts or benign(not cancer) lumps called fibroadenomas. You can read more about breast pain here   and about cysts and fibroadenomas here and here .

Breast cancer in your age group is rare, and many young women find that their lump disappears after their period. But all lumps do need to be checked out by the GP if they persist. They will examine you and advise you further.

  • Hi guys and thank you both for your replies ️

i was seen in a breast clinic around 6 weeks ago and the specialist said he didn't feel anything concerning or any lumps at all. I've also had three different doctors before his do a physical examination and they didn't feel anything either, except for some fibrous tissue which I was told is normal. So I guess what I'm wondering is, could it have been missed? Or could it be a cyst or fibroadenoma which only becomes noticeable when I'm due my period? im due on in a week.

I have an appointment to see my GP on Tuesday, even that feels like forever away. I think I'm just after some reassurance really as I do have very, very bad health anxiety. I'm not even entirely sure if what I'm feeling is even a lump anymore. It feels more like a vein/gland at times depending on the position of my breast. All I know is I'm so scared all of the time

I hope you are both well and again, thank you x

  • Hi again

It's really going to be a case of waiting to be seen again on Tuesday to discuss your concerns with the GP .

It's not unusual to get lumps appearing prior to a period, but no one here will be able to tell you whether this is a lump or not. It's good news though that you have been seen and given the ok by the breast clinic and that a few doctors already have also not found a problem.

You mention you have very bad health anxiety and this can be difficult to cope with - it may helpful to discuss this with the GP to see what support there may be on offer in your area. The following website has good advice too on anxiety -

    All the best
