Check ups

Hi, my daughter finished her treatment for hodgkin's lymphoma stage 3 with 6 rounds over 6 months.  She is in remission which is fantastic, however her check up appointment is not for 5 months after her last treatment.  Is this normal practice?

  • Hello

Thank you for posting a question for us.  I am sorry to read your daughter needed treatment for Hodgkin's disease, but it is good to read she has now completed her treatment and I hope she is recovering well.

Currently the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) recommend, that after treatment for Hodgkin's disease people should be seen 3 monthly for the first half year, then 6 monthly till 4 years after their treatment and then yearly.  You can read this guidance here

Guidance on follow up is, for many cancers, based on senior doctors in organisations like ESMO agreeing what they think the best approach is, rather than a strong evidence base, so sometimes you can see differences in how some treatment centres interpret the guidance.  However, if what I have described is not what your daughter is having it might be worth her asking her team why they are offering her something different to what ESMO suggests.

Regardless of when the doctors schedule appointments it is important to to get in touch with her doctor if she is concerned about anything in between appointments

I hope this has been helpful

    Martin
