Biopsy results

Hello, i had an endoscopy last Monday, and was told i have Barrett's oesophagus, they took a dozen biopsies.

I was not told much other then what they found, i did research as never heard of this before. my question is, how long do the biopsy results usually take, and will they show dysplasia

Im trying to keep my mind busy but its so very hard the wait seems forever

Thank you

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with Barrett's oesophagus.

Barrett's oesophagus means that some cells in the  lining of your food pipe have started to change.

It is really only when the pathologist looks at the cells under the microscope will they able to tell you more about the biopsies that were taken and whether dysplasia is present

We do have some information on our website about this condition which you can read here

I can't tell you how long it will take to get the results back as there are variations up and down the country depending on the work load of the pathologist.

You will be monitored regularly even if no dysplasia is seen and so the doctors will be keeping a constant check on you.

There is more information written about this condition written by the charity GutsUK which you may find helpful to look at. Have a look here

It is good to keep busy whilst you are waiting for the results but it might be helpful to read the links that have provided that may give you a greater insight to this condition and how it is treated or monitored.

If you feel that you would like to talk through any of this then do get back to us  or give us a ring to speak to one of the helpline  nurses. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the Best,

    Catherine
