Re Bowel

Hi am Amanda 47 I had a camer up my bowel in 2019  wud they see a tumour in my bowel or anal with this kind of test and wud a large tumour not be missed

  • Hello Amanda and thanks for your further post

I'm not sure what camera test you had. If it was a flexible sigmoidoscopy a tube is put into the back passage (anus) and gently moves it up into the lower part of the bowel to examine it. They can see the pictures of the inside of the bowel on a TV monitor.  If there  were any polyps in the upper part of the bowel they could be missed. A colonoscopy however, looks at the whole of the inside of the large bowel. If there were any abnormal looking polyps or growths they would have been biopsied at the time and if there was any concern or further tests were needed you would have been told by your doctor.

If you are worried about this it's a good idea to go back to your GP to talk about your concerns. Usually they would get a summary letter from the hospital with any test results and the conclusions of the specialist.

I hope this is of some use .Give us a ring if you would like to talk any of this over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene

  • I've had the one that looks at the whole Bowel

  • I've one dwn my throat has well so if I've had  the large bowel look at and all so camer dwn thoat could somthink be missed could a tumour be missed on this test

  • Hello Amanda and thanks for posting,

Colonoscopies are thought of as the gold standard test to examine inside the bowel and gastroscopies to examine the stomach and food pipe, they are very unlikely to miss anything, but the truth is no test can ever be said to be 100% perfect all of the time.

With a colonoscopy it is important that the bowel is cleared out, if the bowel preparation you took worked well then whoever did it will have been able to have a good look but I don't think you need to worry about either of these test results.

Having said that I get the feeling you are a bit worried about your health at the moment. This can happen when someone in the family has cancer. Do talk things over with your GP if you find you are worrying a lot and give us a ring if you want to talk anything over on Freephone 0808 800 4040, we are here weekdays from 9-5.

    Best wishes,

    Julia

  • I've had 2 of them surly if it was a cancer that was well advanced they wud definitely see it  I've all so had a virginal ultrasound  wud this test see a tumour or advanced cancer in the woman's  like cervix

  • Hello and thanks for getting back to us again,

It does sound like you have been thoroughly investigated and I would have thought that if the doctors had seen any areas that looked suspicious then they would have told you. I think if there was a sign  of advanced cancer it would have shown up.

As Nurse Julia has said the colonoscopy test is the gold standard test for the bowel and gastroscopies are also the gold standard for examining the stomach and food pipe.

I can see that this is causing you some concern so do discuss the results with your GP. They will have had your results from the hospital and will be in a better position to advise you.

I do hope that your GP is able to reassure you.

    All the Best,

    Catherine
