Anxious but think I might be right?

I'm terrified I have bone cancer. I'm a teenager and I've been experiencing an ache just about my knee badly for a couple of weeks. Before I would occasionally get a sharp pain and limp for 10-15mins but it's got worse. Everything I see says bone cancer and I'm a hypochondriac!!! My parent won't take me to the doctors. What should I do /say??

thanks for any help

  • Hello Cammie and thanks for posting,

It is easy to get worried about symptoms when you look them up on line, but primary bone cancer is very rare so just for this reason another and more common explanation is much more likely, for example something that has gone wrong in your knee which is a complex joint.  Even so, our usual advice is to see a GP to be on the safe side when symptoms are persisting and/or getting worse. As this pain has been going on for a while now, it seems reasonable to get a doctor's input so you know how much to rest your leg, what exercises might help and whether or not you need to have physiotherapy.

I can't suggest anything in particular to prompt your parents to take you to the doctors,  if you can get to the GP surgery yourself, you can arrange your own appointment, but try talking to your parents again and see what they say.

Try not to spend too much time looking things up on the internet as doing this usually make people more worried. Almost every symptom going could be due to one type of cancer or another, but most of the time they won't be. Remember the same symptoms that can be caused by cancer also occur for other reasons.

I hope you can get this sorted out and be able to stop worrying about it.

    Best wishes,

    Julia

  • Thank you. I spoke to my mum last night and we are getting a trip booked. I had one more question... how can I be sure it's bone pain because I don't want to say it is to a doctor if it isn't. I really appreciate your help

  • Hello Cammie

Its good to read you are going to see the doctor, that should put your mind at rest and they will be able to see if you need any further tests to find out what is causing the pain.  It is hard for me to say how you can check if it is bone pain, so try to describe your pain as best you can to the doctor and they can make a judgement about whether it is coming from the bone.   For example, if its a dull ache or a sharp pain or a mixture of these explain this to the doctor.  Also you can point to where it is.  The doctor may want to feel your leg in the area where it hurts to assess it too.  It is always sensible to get health problems checked out so you are doing the right thing seeing your doctor.    But don't forget it probably isn't cancer there will most likely be some other explanation.

    Take care

    Martin
