Pain In Ovary One Side Before Period

Hi, I am 24 years old since starting my period at 14 I have always had severe cramping which caused diarrhea aswell. I then went on the pill cerazette at 16 years old, I bled on and off for around 3 years trying to settle on the pill, my doctor told me to bare with it. I then stopped having proper  periods about 2 years ago, no cramping but just occasional bleeding. Now within the recent two years my periods have returned a normal flow again but they last about 10 days instead of 5, I never have blot clots or severe heaviness. Just a continued flow period. Thing that is concerning me the most is all through my life of having period I have always felt it more on the right side, I used to get a niggling pain in my right ovary before I was due on but a couple of years ago the right pain in the middle of the night was so strong I nearly went to a&e it came in waves and eventually went and I started my period. Now I have a period every 2 months and 2 weeks prior to me starting my period this dull pain ache in my right ovary will return along with diarrhea. On the day of my period and for a couple of days in it's really painful and then disappears as my period disappears. I have had ultrasounds and transvaginal ultrasounds neither showed anything.

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

Ovulation pain is quite common, and there is more information about this here,

    www.nhs.uk/.../

Bowel changes are also common in younger women around the time of their period.

Once investigations have ruled out anything obvious, then it is a case of learning to live with it I'm afraid. You might benefit from talking to your GP about changing contraception, as this can sometimes help with this.

    I hope that this helps,

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

  • Hi Alex,

has anything ever come of this? I'm experiencing some of the same symptoms.

    thank you

  • Hello and thanks for your post

It doesn't look like Alex has been active on the forum for a couple of weeks. She may get back to you but I just thought I would jump on to say that some women experience pain in one side of their lower abdomen when they ovulate. It happens about 14 days before their period is due, when an ovary releases an egg as part of the menstrual cycle. You can read more about this at this link

If your symptoms are persisting it's always best to make an appointment to see your doctor to get checked out just to be on the safe side.

    Best wishes,

    Celene

  • Hi,

thankyou for replying to my forum some of you.

I have had two internal ultrasounds and one normal ultrasound and my cervical smear over the past 4 years so I guess it's just painful ovulation that I experience. I just didn't think it was normal for me to be getting it two weeks before my period but several of you have said this is normal. Thankyou for getting back to me.

  • Hi Alex,

im starting to think mines could potentially be ovary related, I had a fit test for my bowels which came back negative and I don't think they are wanting to do any follow up on that! But I'm due my period on Sunday and all this niggling pain has came back today, I called my gp and there's not much they can do. She advised to send me to gyno she needs months of back ground to make sure it's period related. I had all this niggling pain before my period last month I was two weeks late and I'm usually always on time and now I'm due again I'm getting all this pain back again. I have had an ultra sound on my pelvis but never had an internal one, can I ask how you managed to get this done and what was the waiting time? X
