Referral to gynocology

Hello,

im not too sure why im here. Maybe a bit of reassurance!
I had a smear test in august which came back positive for the HPV virus however no abnormal cells. A few weeks after that I noticed spotting blood only after sex which I have never had. I've also had constant back ache (not pain) almost like a period pain ache but the period never comes! I've had this now for the last 6 weeks. I also feel like I smell a bit more down there although hubby hasn't said anything!

ive visited my gp who did the normal tests all fine so I'm now referred to the gyno at the local hospital however due to COVID waits it's not for another 6 weeks. When I read about cervical cancer I think oh that sounds like me, but going thru this forum it's feels unusual to have no abnormal cells and these symptoms so soon after!

I know I won't know for sure until I go for my appointment!

  • Hello  and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your different concerns and the worry that it is causing you.

Your smear test showed HPV but no abnormal cells. That is good to hear. It is the HPV virus that is responsible for causing changes to the cells but even this is not cancer and for cancer to develop it can take many years.

There are other reasons for bleeding and the pain  to happen other then cancer so try not to over think what it all means. The NHS have written some information about bleeding after sex which you can read about here

If your GP was more concerned then they may have considered referring you as an urgent referral which they haven't done.

I can understand how frustrating it is waiting for your appointment to happen. Keep yourself busy and your mind on other things if you  possibly can.

If your symptoms get any worse then do go back to your GP and let them know.

I do hope that you know more soon.

    All the very Best,

    Catherine
