Mouth ulcer for year, been referred. Symptom of mouth cancer?

Hi

I got a mouth ulcer about a year ago around the same time as my molar started breaking up, I assumed the ulcer was because of tooth.  Because of all the Covid stuff I didn't get help, so last week the tooth had broken right down to the gum and my face was swollen, I went to dentist and she removed the tooth, I asked if the ulcer would go away now and she said yes but I think she assumed it had just appeared recently, it was all very rushed and she didn't examine it, four days later I decided to see the doctor, the ulcer is on the roof of my mouth, I'm 56 and a smoker, he didn't ask many questions just said I need it seen by a specialist.

So I've had an ulcer for a year, a crumbling tooth, a clear runny nose every morning, sometimes chocking on food and have pain in my face (6 days after tooth extraction)

Has anyone with mouth cancer had these symptoms /experiences?

  • Hi and thanks for your post

People may get back to you with their own experiences, but do bear in mind that you can't compare , as everyone will have their own story, which doesn't mean to say you will have the same experiences.

The important thing is that you have been referred and if necessary, the specialist will be able to order some tests or do a biopsy to see what this may be. The symptoms you mention don't all necessarily have to be linked, but it's a good idea to mention them all when you go to the hospital.

Good luck with the appointment and I hope the pain starts to settle down soon. Hopefully you are taking some painkillers regularly for this.

    All the best

  • How are you doing winter65? Am in the same boat but still undergoing tests/scans.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear that you are going through different tests for mouth cancer. I can understand what an unsettling time it must be for you.

Unfortunately until you get the results of all the different tests no one will be able to tell you any more.

We have some information on our website about the different tests that the doctors may decide to do to help get to the bottom of any symptoms that you have which you can see here

Even though it is helpful and supportive chatting to other members of the forum it is important to remember that everyone's situation will be slightly different.

I hope that you are also getting support from friends and family. If at any time you want to give one of the nurses a ring on the helpline then you are more then welcome to do so..  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best Wishes,

    Catherine
