Should I be worried

Hi I need some advice as worried I've recently started bleeding from my vagina after having a bowel movement. Today I have also started getting cramps and dark coloured discharge on my knickers. I don't have periods because I have the depo injection. I have spoken to Dr who has booked me a smear and I'm to take swabs myself to be sent off, I've also had bloods done today due to feeling very fatigued and  lethargic, but I do have a under active thyroid so want to check that. I just want some advice really as feeling worried

  • Hello and thanks for your post

There can be many reasons why women may bleed between periods and you can read about this on the NHS website here. Some of the most common causes are a hormonal imbalance or taking the contraceptive pill or injection.

It sounds like your doctor has taken your symptoms seriously as they have arranged for you to have bloods taken and a smear test. I think until the results are available, no one will be able to tell you any more. Your symptoms could be related to a number of different gynaecological conditions, so they may consider doing further tests such as an ultrasound over time if needed. It's often a process of elimination to find out the cause of someone’s symptoms.

Waiting to find out more is never easy but I'm afraid there is no real way around this. Some people find sticking to a routine and keeping busy and talking to family and friends can sometimes help. But until you know more it's natural to worry.

I hope you know more about your situation soon. Give us a ring if you want to talk anything through. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards
