Have had a pain in my left breast for a couple of months went to doctor who examined me she said nothing wrong and sent me home as pain persisted went back and was sent to breast clinic on Wednesday had mammogram then saw consultant who said I had breasted cancer after seeing her I had a scan and biopsy this has been such a shock I’ve been feeling sick since yesterday can she be this sure before biopsy results

  • Hello Katyboo and thanks for posting,

I can understand you being shocked at what the breast clinic consultant said. I don't think anyone is prepared for hearing that they have cancer so most people react in a similar way. Some say they feel numb for a while too.

I think the consultant you saw must be as sure as she can be otherwise she wouldn't have said what she did. A tissue biopsy is usually needed to confirm cancer, but sometimes other test results can be highly suggestive of cancer, so I assume she has drawn this conclusion from something seen on the mammogram, possibly together with the examination.

A diagnosis like this can take a while to adjust to and it can be hard to believe when you feel completely well which most most women diagnosed with breast cancer do.  At the moment you are in the thick of it as you don't have the full details from the biopsy and nor do you know what the specialist team will recommend in terms of treatment. Waiting to find all of this out can be very stressful, but try and take it slowly and let the diagnosis wash over you a bit. Breast cancer treatment is tailored to each person and the features of their cancer, so it can vary, but in general outcomes are often good.

I hope you have plenty of support. If you want to talk anything over please call us on Freephone 0808 800 4040, we are around on weekdays from 9am till 5pm.

    Best wishes,
