Appointment after skin biopsy. Help!

Hi all. I, like many have removed a mole a while ago. I had a terrible experience since day one. It was a mole that didnt look very good at all and it was between my shoulder blades so never saw it that much. After seeing my GP I got referred to a local dermatologist and then to another one in a bigger city (as I live in a village). As I stepped into the dermatologist office I was met with: "okey so where is your skin cancer?" -- bare in mind that I didnt know that even was on the cards! I was terrified!!

After that meeting I got referred to get it removed three weeks after that meeting but I was lucky and got a last minute cancellation the following day to get it removed. And from then theres been a horrible waiting game. When I got it removed they said that I'd probably get a call when they have the result, but the other day I got a letter with an appointment instead. I am sooooo nervous, sad and afraid. I'm only 28 but I have read scary things and are expecting the worst. Is it normal to get called in? Has anyone experienced something similar? I have terrible anxiety every day.

Thanks a lot Xx Dijana

  • Hello Dijana and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation. It is never easy waiting for results. I can understand how stressful it can be.

Try if you can to take one step at a time until you know more. It is very easy to over think things and think the worst. You may find that it is much better then you expected.

Try if you can to distract your self by keeping busy and your mind occupied.

A lot of people turn to the internet but this rarely helps and causes unnecessary worry so do try and avoid this if you can.

The NHS has some information called 'Every Mind Matters'. It has useful tips on how to help cope when you are feeling anxious. Have a look at the information here

If you feel that you would like to give us a call on the nurses helpline either before or after your appointment then you are more then welcome to do so.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take Care,

    Catherine

  • Thank you for your reply Catherine.

Is it normal to get called in fro an appointment after a biopsy? I feel that they would only call me in if it was bad. Can't help thinking about that.

  • Hello Dijana and thanks for getting back to us,

Different NHS trusts and departments do different things - so in some places it probably is normal for a lot of patients to be called in.

I know it is a challenging situtaion, but try not to read too much into having an appointment and follow Catherine's advice.

    Best wishes,

    Julia
