Lump/Cyst in 12 year old sons groin

Hi

looking for advise.  My 12 year old started with a spot type thing in his groin.  He said tried to squeeze it.  Since then has become painful to bend and to touch... It has grown in size prob size of a thumb nail.  It also is concave in the middle... No discharge but seems to be increasing in size.  I could not get an appointment to see a Dr and could only speak to the practise nurse.  She said will give antibiotics.  I am just asking for advise as they don't feel need to see my son... I have now sent a photo in the hope they will...

  • Hello Ruby1967 and thanks for posting,

Things like this can be a worry for any mother, but in general, because cancer is rare in children, when symptoms like this crop up, common explanations, for example infections, are much more likely.  So it would probably be a good idea to give the antibiotics a go and see if the lump starts to clear up and if not,  get back in touch with the surgery.

I don't know if anything will change as a result of the photo, but if you feel your son needs to be seen, then be persistent and ask for an appointment with the GP. If this doesn't work think about contacting the practice manager and asking them to help.

I hope this is of some use, call us if you want to talk anything over on 0808 800 4040- we are here weekdays, 9-5.

    Best wishes,

    Julia

  • Hi yes this was a great help.  I have now had a call after

sending the photo.  They want to try antibiotics and I have to measure and photo to see how it goes or if gets smaller with the medication.
