Wait for scan or see a doctor

I found a small lump in my left breast, at 52 I'm eligible for breast screening. So I have rung and made an appointment, I explained I had found a lump, and they made an appointment for me for November 9th, which is about 3 weeks away. The answer service before I got put through said appointments are delayed due to Covid so I assume going through my GP wouldn't be any quicker. But should I be going through my GP?

  • As worrying as it is, see your GP. They can refer you under the 2 week wait, you'll see a specialist, have Imaging etc on the day. Screening is for women without symptoms so you'll have to wait for results, get called back, wait to be referred.

  • Hello and thanks for your further post

It's always advisable to make an appointment to see your GP when you have breast symptoms such as a breast lump. Breast screening is for women without symptoms ( when they reach the right age) who are invited to have a mammogram every 3 years.

Normally, when you speak to the GP they would refer you to the breast clinic for further assessment. This can take two or 3 weeks, but it might be sooner than this.

I hope everything turns out to be okay.

    Best wishes,

    Celene
