Worried about colonoscooy biopsy results

Hi,   I am wondering if anyone can put my mind at rest.  Last week I received the results of my colonoscopy biopsy.  A 8mm flat polyp was found which could not be removed at the time of the colonoscopy so biopsies were taken.  I received a phone call about 2 weeks later to say that I had High Grade Dysplasia which is precancerous,  I now have received appointments for both a  CT and MRI scan next week.  Im terrified that the polyp is full blown cancer,  I have spoken to a nurse who tells me that they can't be sure until after the scans,  can anyone tell me if they have had these  kind of tests and what the results and treatment were going forward,  I'm really scared that Im going to end up up with either full blown cancer and/or a stoma.

  • Hello Jaxcats and thanks for posting,

I can appreciate that this is a difficult situation to be in, and I think a lot of people would be feeling unnerved or scared, but this could just be a precancerous polyp so try not to let fear run away with you and do your best to keep an open mind.

Early bowel cancer is a potentially curable disease, and very often when the cancer is removed, the bowel can be re-joined without needing a stoma. But try not to dwell overly on what will happen if this does turn out to be cancer and do your best to take things one step at a time.

Uncertainty is hard to cope with, and I expect you will be feeling uneasy until you have the scan results.  A lot of people turn to the internet to look for answers, but they are seldom to be found there and you can end up going around in fruitless circles and fret even more. So try and resist it and do what you can to distract yourself.

Other people's circumstances might not mirror yours very well, so bear this in mind if someone else comes along and posts.

If you want to talk anything over please give us a call on Freephone 0808 800 4040, we are here weekdays 9-5.
