Tamoxifen

Hi, I've had problems with sensitive bladder and UTIs for years but the bladder normally settles with antibiotics. I started Tamoxifen on 22 Sept, did have a UTI at the time so had treatment. But I am still urinating at least 4 times a night. I am thinking the Tamoxifen had irritated my bladder as my last urine dip was negative (apart from leucocytes but I do have a complicated sinus condition which is playing up - so am run down). My question is I have just ordered some herbal meds based on pumpkin seeds from Victoria Health. They're called Icelandic Angelic leaf extract and contain the following

Organic Angelica archangelica leaf extract 100mg, Organic Pumpkin seed extract 150mg. In a base of organic Alfalfa.
Are they likely to cause any harm? Thinking of interaction with Tamoxifen, effect on hormones etc? Many thanks, Zebedea

  • Hello Zebedea and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear that you are feeling run down and have to get up so frequently at night.

Whenever anyone asks us about whether it is possible to take supplements with cancer treatments such as tamoxifen we always suggest that they discuss this with their oncology team or breast care nurse. There are a lot of drug interactions that can occur with tamoxifen and from what I have read Alfalfa may be one of these.

You could also check with your pharmacist to see what they say.

Have a look at our information on vitamins and supplements on our website here

There is also some information about this on the Breast Cancer Now website here.

It may be helpful to go back and see your GP to see what they advise about the urinary frequency at night time to see what they suggest.

If you feel that you would like to chat this through with one of the nurses on the helpline then do get back to us or give us a ring.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the Best,

    Catherine

  • Thank you Catherine. My GP has just prescribed more antibiotics as she has sent a sample off (I thought it was just a dip test) and I have a urine infection still. I will speak to Breast Care team if I ever choose to take the herbal supplement but will leave it for now. Many thanks, Zebedea
